Gardening Basics
So this is a 13 video series (each video is about 6 minutes long) and is one of the best basic how to garden videos I’ve come across so far. Now there are some things that I’d do different, but overall it is a really great way to learn the process of gardening. I will sometimes suggest square foot gardener, but I feel like it lacks some key elements that this hits on. This video covers the material in the book How to Grow More Vegetables: Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine by John Jeavons, but with these videos you get almost everything you need!
Some key terms you might want to know before you watch:
Organic Matter: matter that has come from a once-living organism; is capable of decay, or the product of decay; or is composed of organic compounds.
Bio-intensive: a method/approach for an organic agricultural system which focuses on maximum yields from the minimum area of land, while simultaneously improving the soil.
Microclimate: the climate of a small area, such as your backyard. Microclimates can vary over very short distances due to variations in the site’s topography and the presence of rocks, trees and walls, factors which alter the wind, moisture, temperature and sunlight.
Double Digging: The method where you loosen the soil very deep, often 24″ deep.
